Dizzle Mission: Santa Prep

It’s that special time that comes only once a year. And we’re counting down to the most special night of the year! When we remember Christ born into the world. And when the giving of gifts gets symbolized with the story of a mysterious old elf sneaking presents beneath the Christmas tree. Well, it’s time for that jolly elf, Santa, to get ready for his worldly voyage!

Collect candy canes, stars, and holly scattered on Santa’s person. And if you complete the prep for his hat, beard (it’s gotta be combed or it’s all a-tangle), coat, belt, pants, and boots, you can score extra points. (It’s a race to some of those for the most points!) Jamie made this map, and Adam helped playtest and develop it. See the notes below about gameplay and scoring.

Here is the player sheet. Enjoy -- and merry Christmas!

Stocking stuffer.

Setup

Follow the normal game setup, unless you want to play with extra players. Even though standard Dizzle only supports 4 players, it can theoretically handle more. You can add 3 10mm dice per player, to play up to 6 players. (If you play with 5 or 6 players, never cross out the 4th place scoring points for the Hat, Beard, and Boots. Anyone who completes one of these after at least 3 other players still gets the 4th place points. See the section “End of Game Scoring” below.***)

(Although it isn’t shown at the top of the sheet, you can even play a solo game on this level by playing 12 rounds.)

Gameplay

adjacency rules example

Some fields (aka “spaces”) connect to another space by sharing only half of a side with that space. So these spaces are adjacent, even though they don’t share a whole side. You can place dice on these spaces just like normally adjacent spaces.

Playable spaces (the spaces with dice pips for placing dice) which are adjacent to one another connect to one another even if they have different colors. Some of these include the connections from Santa’s face to his beard, his beard to his coat, his coat to his belt, and his coat sleeve to his coat sleeve cuff. If playable spaces (of whatever colors) share at least half of a side with each other, they are adjacent. Spaces not sharing at least half of a side do not connect.

BUT you’ll notice something else unique to this level. In real life, cookies and milk help Santa fill out. In Santa Dizzle, some extra embellishments help fill out the graphic depiction of Santa. Smaller shapes join the playable square spaces of the game. They keep Santa from looking completely square.

non-playable shapes example

These other shapes are NOT playable spaces. And they never, on their own, create adjacency between playable spaces (the spaces with dice pips for placing dice). So watch closely as you plan what dice to take. Remember that playable spaces must share at least half of a side with each other, to be adjacent and to connect to one another.

Santa's belt buckle

Santa’s belt buckle circle works similarly to Dizzle’s rockets & planets. When you have a die on the belt buckle space and then you cross out the belt buckle, you must immediately cross out the circle space on Santa’s hat. (Notice that this is the only way to place dice on Santa’s hat, since the gap between the spaces of Santa’s face and those of his hat prevents those spaces from being adjacent!)

We highly recommend playing Santa Dizzle with our “Jumps Abound” Dizzle mini-variant. Without it, it could be nearly impossible to complete the big scoring areas.

End of Game Scoring

For each area below, you must fully cross it out to get points. (Note that the non-playable shapes filling out these areas (described two paragraphs back) do not matter. You only need to cross out all the playable spaces (the spaces with dice pips for placing dice) to complete these areas.)

  • Hat***

  • Beard***

  • Coat*

* Note that the cuffs of the coat sleeves are part of the full coat shape. But Santa’s hands are not.

  • Belt**

  • Pants**

** Ah, the old belt and pants problem....

  • If you fully cross out the Belt but do not fully cross out the Pants, you lose 25 points.

  • But if you fully cross out both, you instead get 40 points.

  • If you fully cross out the Pants but do not fully cross out the Belt, at least Santa is wearing pants; you get 20 points.

Boots***

*** The Hat, Beard, and Boots involve racing to see who can complete them the fastest. These work similarly to Dizzle’s checkered flags. (If you play with 5 or 6 players, never cross out the 4th place scoring points for the Hat, Beard, and Boots. Anyone still gets the 4th place points if they complete one of these areas any time after at least 3 other players do.)

Candy Canes and Stars work just like gemstones in Dizzle.

  • Each individual Candy Cane you cross out gives you 2 points.

  • Each Double Candy Cane you cross out gives you 4 points.

  • Each Star you cross out gives you 3 points.

Each Holly Bough can give you 5 points. Each holly bough touches 2 spaces. If you cross out both spaces a holly bough touches, you get the 5 points for that holly bough.
